THIS SKIN THING
is a project of second year students in textile design at the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee in Germany.
Skin is more than just a surface: It works as barrier, protection and interface between inside and outside. It forms the basis for self-perception and identity and enables connections between individuals or groups, be it physically or imaginary. "Models of Skin" can be found everywhere, as biologic layer(ing)s, as functional membranes, as psychic "coatings" or social or cultural "skins".
Our project "This Skin Thing" grapples with organic, technical, material or visual / virtual surfaces which are translated into design concepts for the skin model (biological skin, second skin = clothing, third skin = architecture). It is a borderline approach between reality and projection, function and aesthetics, materials and symbols, objectivity and subjectivity.
The potential and the dilemma of Europa can be compared with the skin model. Contrasting history, with inscriptions in nature and culture, differences, conflicts but also longstanding cultural exchanges. A continent with distinct national and regional heterogenities but growing commonalities. Borders getting more and more permeable from the inside, and becoming fortified from outside. In contrast with coherent, closed formations, the functioning, roles and vision of the present Europe are difficult to apprehend for us individuals, and new perspectives are mixed with skepticism. Just as in the skin model, border- and exchange functions between inside and outside are the conditions for communication and integration within Europe. The European potential resides in the diversity of differences and the capacity for their integration. This is not meant as adding up or mixing up, but as exchange and alternating experiences with each other. We cannot really put ourselves in the place of others, but we can get to know their "skins". All at once, Europe is a real structure and a virtual surface for projection. Heterogenous historical layers als raw material for the future.

Haut ist mehr als eine Oberfläche: Sie fungiert als Grenze, Schutzwall und Kontaktfläche zwischen innen und außen, bildet die Basis der Selbstwahrnehmung und Identitätsbildung und ermöglicht gleichzeitig eine Verbindung zwischen einzelnen Subjekten oder Gruppen - physisch oder imaginär. Ihr "Modell" ist überall zu finden, als biologische Schicht(ung) oder als funktionelle Membran, aber auch als psychische Hülle oder soziale/kulturelle Haut.
Das Projekt "This Skin Thing" setzt sich mit organischen oder technischen, materiellen oder bildhaften/imaginären Oberflächen auseinander, die im Hinblick auf das Modell Haut (biologische Haut, Kleidung als zweite Haut, Architektur als dritte Haut) in gestalterische Konzepte übertragen werden. In unterschiedlicher Form geht es dabei immer un einen Grenzgang zwischen Realität und Projektion, Funktion und Ästhetik, Materiellem und Symbolischem, Objektivem und Subjektivem.
Das Potenzial, aber auch das Dilemma Europas ist durchaus mit dem Modell Haut in Einklang zu bringen. Ein Kontrast von Geschichte, der Einschreibungen in Natur und Kultur, der Differenzen, Konflikte aber auch eines langen interkulturellen Austauschs. Ein Kontinent mit ausgeprägten nationalen und regionalen Heterogenitäten, auch auch (wachsenden) Gemeinsamkeiten. Grenzen, die innen immer durchlässiger werden und außen verstärkt. Im Gegensatz zu kohärenteren, geschlosseneren Gebilden sind Funktionsweise, Aufgabe und Rolle des gegenwärtigen Europas für den Einzelnen kaum zu überschauen, Perspektiven mischen sich mit Zweifeln. Ähnlich wie beim Modell Haut (real oder imaginär) sind Grenz- und Austauschfunktionen zwischen Innen und Außen auch hier Bedingung für Kommunikation und Integration, und das Gelingen dieses Wechselspiels ist nicht immer gesichert.
Das Potential des zukünftigen Europas liegt in der Mannigfaltigkeit der Unterschiede und in der Fähigkeit ihrer Integration. Dabei geht es nicht um Addition oder Vermischung, sondern um Austausch und wechselseitige Erfahrbarkeit. Wir können uns nicht wirklich in den Anderen hineinversetzen, aber seine "Haut" können wir kennenlernen. Europa ist gleichzeitig ein reales Gebilde und eine Projektionsfläche. Heterognene (Ge)Schichte(n) als Material für die Zukunft.
